I can’t even with Trump’s speech, it’s so stupid, and so is the government shutdown. This might sink his approval ratings.

I have managed not to hear even one word of it. Whenever I hear President Trump’s voice, I cover my ears and cry, “ Na-na-na-na-na-na-na” until he’s gone. People say the economy , but I keep hearing that the stock market is worse than it’s been in decades. So bad that people are delaying retirement. Is this it? Is this the turning moment?

And NPR hasn’t rebroadcast even a syllable in this morning’s news.

My father, who turns 84 in February, has lost about $4,000 over the past year due to the falling stock market. Most of his money is in CD’s and other safe investments, but he still has a bit in money markets and 401Ks. He is not a fan of the Donald.

Here’s what’ll happen with the Americans and their budget:

A budget will be proposed that includes billions for “enhanced border security”

Trump will say: that’s what I wanted all along!

He’ll sign

The Democrats will say: we’ve haven’t given him his wall

Everybody’s happy

Life goes on

Except they have already tried to do that, and it failed. The word wall has to be in the bill or his supporters will see it as a failure.

He can sell it to them (he’s the master of the deal, remember?) by saying that the wall was just an opening gambit and everyone aims high at first.

What leaves me shaking my head is how he keeps saying all these spurious things, and then pretends he never said them, and nobody really challenges him on any of them. I mean, why aren’t the Democrats mailing an invoice to Mexico? The Mexican government would be on board with that stunt because they’ll never pay it and it would make Trump shut up, right?

What I’d really like to see is the Democrats author a bill that says unless the government is fully funded, no politicians or their aides or their staffs get their salaries. Let the president veto that one.

I’m just way, way beyond disgusted. So many people pretending that this guy is not a clown.

His approval ratings have been basically the lowest of any modern president at the same point pretty much since he took office. He has virtually no support outside of his core supporters. The question is when, or if, he starts to lose those folks. For as much as they are with him on the wall, I’m curious what happens when those folks start really running into problems with the shut down.

When they start to not get income tax refunds in a few weeks, it might get more interesting.  The effects of federally insured mortgage lo ans starting to not be processed might be interesting, too. Those federally insured loans are basically how w orking and lower-middle class folks (of which the the white and more rural is his base) buy and sell houses.

Well they claim that the IRS has been directed to issue tax refunds without delay – but as far as I know a majority of those folks have been furloughed, so not sure how exactly that will happen. Either more folks are being asked to work without guarantee of getting paid anytime soon (how nice!) or it’s a big fat lie for political purposes (what?!) in hopes of this all blowing past by the time tax refunds actually start rolling back out.

I just can’t take his vague general statements, a majority of which are just blatant and obvious lies, and his outright strange manner of speech. Combine that with his stupid fat orange face and that annoying voice – I really can’t think of any other human being on earth that would be worse to have to sit through and listen to.

You see his wording changing all along. Started off as a big beautiful solid concrete wall across the entire southern border, paid for by Mexico. That last bit was the first to fall out…now no mention of that at all other than bogus claims that USMCTA (which hasn’t even passed congress) will pay for it. I wish I could use that logic at home to buy cars I don’t need. See, this car is German and we just bought some German appliances at a solid discount…so really the car is paying for itself!

Then the talk about the entire border got cut short…because rivers, mountains, etc. Which is what people have been saying all along – and what the existing barriers were built around. And then now he no longer needs it to be a concrete wall, will be OK with steel slats.

Just wait and see, the shutdown will get worse, he’ll continue to walk back his position all the while maintaining (and his core supporters believing) that he hasn’t budged an inch. He’ll end up with the $1.3B in border security they’ve already offered, maybe a bit more…and he’ll act as if he just delivered the sickest burn to the democrats and won royally. And his supporters will cheer with glee being vindicated that their support for this madman has been the right call all along, so now let’s get behind him on to the next dumpster fire he’s started.

I just read about that, but I’ll be interested to see how, and if, it actually happens. Considering they haven’t even finalized filing rules yet, even before factoring all the massive tax law changes that apply for this first time this season, and with most of the workforce not having been to work in weeks, this strikes me as a bit like Hitler issuing orders to armies that no longer existed from his bunker.

Yup – agreed, curious to see how it all plays out. I’m a CPA but not on the tax side, so don’t have any insight although I’m eager to see how different my taxes look as a result of tax reform. SIL is a tax accountant and at least from her side the IRS has been effectively shuttered as far as her office is concerned. So yeah…claims right now that tax refunds will go out on regular schedule sounds like a huge stretch.

I think we’ve had too much comedic liberal mockery of conservatives for too many years — like Jon Stewart, for example, whom I love, BTW — and this helped lead us to Trump and I’ve eschewed it all as a result. Interesting take. I’m not sure that I agree it is a problem, but I do think there is a problem in the reaction to it by about half the country. When you can’t laugh at yourself, something is very wrong. I don’t know what that it is or how to fix it, but I think Trump is a symptom of a of a disagreement that is going to make the 60's look like a minor family tiff. I just hope it isn’t one that makes the civil war look like a minor family disagreement, because the historian in me can’t escape the fact that the last time our political rhetoric looked like this was the 1850's.

This is going to be long.

A) I know I harp on him, but I find Sam Harris take to be the most neutral and nuanced takedowns. paraphasing “you can’t even call him a liar, because liars make a series of statements meant to convince you of something. trump is a bullshitter, because his statements aren’t to convince you but either a loyalty test or a giant Fuck you to those that care.”

B) Trump got his start first with birtherism gaining a fringe of the republican party, then with his escalator campain speech gaining racists, and through the campaign absorbed folks pissed off at globalization, demographic changes, and Washington. After getting the nominaiton suddenly he found god gaining Evangelicals and after winning Wall Street became A OK. Throughout the whole thing, the mantra was said “he’ll calm down after the election,” When that was BS it became “ he has to grow and learn ’ , to “well at least he’ll surround himselft with smart people” “he’s a business man he’ll improve the economy”

Washington gossip and public demonstration have proven he’s not changing. Wall st and donors got their tax cut, so there isn’t much he can do anymore. The tarrif bs is going to make them turn. Only thing to keep evangelicals is the event of RBG passing so he can get another judge. Especially with Mattis and some Kelly gone there are no more adults in the room. Family sycophants, and yes men. So that excuse is gone. Now a majority in congress, that won’t bend over for him. he knows hes up shits creek, so he needs to rile up his base. The shutdown hits 2 things washington and immigration. The whole washignotn on “ strike” talking point went down like a lead balloon.. he only has his base and is going to get more rabid to try and save his ass.

There's a woman at church who is straight-up Fox/Glenn Beck/&c. We are a global Christian faith, not Evangelical, and she and I never agree on anything and I am waiting for her to come around so that she and I can agree on Donald Trump's lack of fitness for the position he holds. I don't blame people for voting Trump when the option was HRC, but pretending everything is hunky dory I find very disconcerting.

I can see that. I can understand that some folks bought what he was selling. What worries me is the 40%ish of people who still support him this far in. At this point, everyone knows who he is and what his supporters want. I see only pretty dark reasons behind that support , and maybe the very least bad one is a willingness to disregard the means necessary to get to a result they want (or think they want). At that point, I start coming to the conclusion that we don’t really have differences of politics, we have different moralities. That’s a hard place to work together from.  I used to think we were better than this as country...

He can get pretty winded on Budd hism. But concerning politics I find him refreshing as he’ll get republicans (and some exiled ones) to go on and he’ll ask whats the best strong-man argument for trump. before 2016 he had a 3 hour podcast with Andrew Sullivan, and the first hour was just a brutal takedown of the Clintons , followed by here is why I am still voting for her.

I think some of the ones with David Frum, anne Applebaum are also good.

My concern is that if the parties splinter up. Such as the young progressives break off before the tea party does on the republican side . My concern is that in a multi party country you could get a situtaion where one party could just whore itself out for sprecial intersts such as slashing enviromental regula tions, get a shit load of campaign donations and that support against would be split between 2 or more parties. In a parlimentary system it isn’t uncommon to have party coilition, but I’m not sure how that would work in the US. Its late and t his isn’t as well thought out as my earlier reply.

I have a cousin for whom biden is the devil, bernie is ok , but t hinks Jill s tein is where its at. And I just can;t comprehend, let me get this straight you would rather risk having trump for 4 more years and get not just zero but policy rollbacks t han go with Biden and get 75%?

I have conservative friends at church who voted Trump and would have voted Biden, given that choice rather than HRC. In all of this, HRC is the person who has my ire, and Debbie Wasserman Schulz, all those efite, arrogant DNC people who backed Hillary, who wound up being unelectable. I’m not saying she wasn’t qualified, but even had she been elected, the acrimony would have been severe for her entire term in office.

Different moralities. That’s a thing to ponder.

There are several people I can think of right off who I believe have moralities very closely aligned to my own, but who view things like civility , rhetoric, manners , much differently than I do or my parents did or my grandparents. For me, the most important thing is honesty , and my expectation is that my fellow humans will be honest and forthright in their dealings with me and with everyone else. So if you act polite , then you really are polite, not some hater phony being nice. That’s what I want in my universe. Maybe that’s unreasonable. Certainly, current events and political discourse are proving my desire to be unrealistic. But it’s hard for me to separate rhetoric from morality.

To wit, I recently had an experience at work. I am a public school educator; I teach 8th grade mathematics. Cushy job. Demanding, but cushy. I’ve had real jobs, and I prefer this one. Anyhow, yesterday, our rookie principal, who is not a rookie administrator, dropped something on us in a faculty meeting and I got frosted and I chose to immediately speak out. A Latina colleague — she chooses to make Latina part of what identifies her, though it’s an obvious descriptor, and to ignore it would be ridiculous, conspicuous and, I would argue, downright inconsiderate — gave me a look of exasperation like she might give to a child, when I spoke up. Afterward, I said, you know, if I had this one small concession, I could live happily with the new protocol. This woman then proceeded to lecture me on emotional intelligence, yada yada. She’s a good ten years younger and, frankly, carries on like a bar tramp at the staff happy hour (which I will not attend a second time) and I’m like, really ? If she wants to act and look like a party animal drama royalty, fine, but don’t judge me on my own comportment, particularly when I come clean with you about it. But here’s the thing: her trampy behavior she (mostly) does on her own time, not at work. Me? You get the same guy at work that you do at home or at Walmart or on Oppo, with the possible difference that at church, I will be a bit less juvenile, perhaps, and certainly a bit more reverent. There’s no schism, no bifurcation. What you see is what you get.

So it’s difficult for me to separate comportment from morality.

A b it of a digression, I admit, but real talk.
